Whoisology provides a free Chrome add on to let you access the registration details of the website you are on.

Whois is often mistakenly thought of as the entity responsible for worldwide registrations of Internet domains – it isn’t.

It is, however, the term that is used to describe the data that every registrant of a URL must provide under the terms of the “governing body”, ICANN.

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is a private, (non-government) not for profit organisation with overall responsibility for IP address allocation, protocol parameter assignment, domain name system management, and root server system management functions. It is ICANN that calls the tune and ensures that all registrations and carried out correctly. The onus is on the registrant to ensure that the information they provide is accurate and up to date.
