Keyword Research For Free? – May We Suggest Ubersuggest

Ubersuggest free keywords tool has made a bit of a name for itself as a free alternative to Google’s own, also free, AdWords Keyword Planner. It is, however, not quite that straightforward – unlike many Keyword Research Tools, Ubersuggest provides you with very useful and possibly even valuable alternatives to the results that you would get from Google’s Keyword Planner and other research tools which draw their data from it, (which is, in fact, most of them).

So where do the words that Übersuggest suggests come from? They are generated from the auto suggestions that search engines make when you begin to type in a search term, e.g. when I typed in “off shore”, Google suggested:

It is these suggestions that Übersuggest draws from when creating the results for your enquiry, along with those from other search engines and similar sources.

There was a bit of an upset last year when the meanies at Google apparently closed their autosuggest API to outside developers meaning that services like Übersuggest could not use it as a source. Good old Google – anything to help, eh?

Nonetheless, the proprietor of Übersuggest seems to have overcome Google’s efforts to thwart him and stifle the free flow of information onto the internet because Übersuggest still provides a very useful source of keyword lists that you simply won’t get from Google’s own, highly restricted and controlled, Keyword Planner.

So we can all be grateful for that, but what would Übersuggest give us if we use the same example as above?

Übersuggest your friendly keyword tool

First you select your preference for a data source – the default, “Web,” is a bit vague, due to the reasons I’ve outlined in the previous paragraph but it’s the one that I want at the moment.
Then you press “Suggest” and the following results are given:

As you can see, all the words that Google suggested, as shown in my first image, have made it in to the list, along with 300 or so others, all nicely arranged into an alphabetical list. You can filter the results and download it for use however you want. Plus, there’s another really great toy to play with – a wordcloud, here’s mine!

Cool eh? Anyway, that’s enough fun for one day, back to work.

Übersuggest is a useful free keyword research tool that I would be happy to pay for – but I don’t have to and neither do you. It’s true that the tool does not include any of the analysis features to be found in more expensive tools like Keyword Canine, Market Samurai and Keyword Spy but it does give you a list of words, many of which you won’t find in the lists produced by some of those paid-for tools.

The publisher of Übersuggest seems content to make money from the ads that he runs on the site and there’s no mention of an upgrade or “premium” version.  That being the case, how could I not recommend that you bookmark Übersuggest and use it as another, completely free source of keywords for your PPC, Content Marketing and SEO campaigns.

Depending on your niche and the type of work you do, Ubersuggest may be the only free keyword tool you need but even if it isn’t it will give you a different perspective on the keyword pool that is available to you and your campaigns.
