Whoisology Chrome Extension – Website Ownership Details at your Fingertips

Whoisology provides a free Chrome add on to let you access the registration details of the website you are on.

Whois is often mistakenly thought of as the entity responsible for worldwide registrations of Internet domains – it isn’t.

It is, however, the term that is used to describe the data that every registrant of a URL must provide under the terms of the “governing body”, ICANN.

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is a private, (non-government) not for profit organisation with overall responsibility for IP address allocation, protocol parameter assignment, domain name system management, and root server system management functions. It is ICANN that calls the tune and ensures that all registrations and carried out correctly. The onus is on the registrant to ensure that the information they provide is accurate and up to date.

The bottom line is that if you, or anyone else, registers a domain name (URL) then there is a minumum level of information that must be provided – this is known as WHOIS data and it is publicly available via various services, most of which are free.

One such service is Whoisology, the providers of this free browser add-on. Once installed you simply click on the icon once you are on the website that you want to find out about and Whoisology will provide you with the registration details for the domain in question.

A typical Whoisology lookup would look like this:

Please bear in mind that this information is in the public domain and freely available – no one’s privacy is being violated here.

Whois lookups are very useful for many different reasons – you may wish to know who owns a particular website that seems to be in competition with you, who owns a website that you are unhappy with, who owns a website that you would like to buy, and so on. All of this data is freely available.

Whoisology provide a range of WHOIS related services from their website: https://whoisology.com/

The Whoisology Chrome extension is a free tool that simplifies the process of looking up the ownership and registration details of a website. The extension can be found on the Google Chrome Web Store: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/whoisology/gjbaneokkjggnfmgnkbpagfjcodamaag.

If this kind of data is important to you, maybe if you intend to start flipping websites or if you are building a private blog network, then you might want to take a look at the other (paid for) services offered by Whoisology on their main website, which is here https://www.whois.com/
